Research Projects

EU funded projects where we have exhibited our expertise in the Areas of Probabilistic, Descriptive Software, GIS Link-Ups, System and Data Integration, and AI-enabled chatbot technology.

Eco-Bot

ECOBOTIn the ongoing Eco-Bot project, we have developed a virtual energy assistant that delivers information about energy consumption on an appliance level and user-tailored advice on energy efficiency measures, aspiring to engage users towards more energy efficient behaviour. To this end, Eco-Bot explores non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) algorithms, multi-factorial behaviour modelling, and natural language processing. The chatbot functionality, enabled by artificial intelligence, offers an attractive frontend interface, permitting seamless communication in a more natural and interactive way than a traditional mobile application. This way, Eco-Bot aims to achieve a higher level of engagement with consumers than previous efforts (i.e. serious games, gamification, competitions or other interactive ICT), by adding a more engaging form of interaction with existing platforms that has been proven in different market settings.

MONICO

monicoIn the MONICO project an optimized fiber optics sensing system has been developed for the continuous monitoring of deformation in reinforced concrete tunnel linings. It provides input to a DSS on tunnel safety that processes this information to assess the structural reliability of the monitored lining under operating and seismic loading.

WATERPIPE

waterpipeA high resolution, imaging, ground penetrating radar for the detection of pipes, leaks and damages and the imaging of the damaged region has been developed. It provides input to a DSS that uses it to assess probabilistically, the time-dependent structural reliability of the inspected pipe and allow for risk-based rehabilitation planning. For more information, please refer to WATERPIPE.

SEWERINSPECT

SEWERINSPECTClosed-Circuit-Television (CCTV) inspection is by far the most common method utilized for the inspection of sewer networks. The pivotal question in all such inspections is how to translate what is seen into a program of action. The software developed in SEWERINSPECT accepts input from CCTV inspections based on which it can assess the structural reliability of the inspected pipe as a function of time, taking into account sewer deterioration by various degradation mechanisms, seismic forces and uncertainties, and select the best remedial measures, prioritize rehabilitation projects and schedule re-inspection.

LEAKING

LEAKINGTwo innovative procedures for leakage detection in underground water pipes using electromagnetic waves have been developed. They provide input to software that can assess probabilistically the time-dependent evolution of leakage and structural reliability of the inspected pipe. For more information, please refer to LEAKING.

SEISLINES

SEISLINESA DSS has been developed that can assess the seismic structural reliability of water mains and determine the optimum time and type of rehabilitation.

VARDA-GEN

A fault tree markov state modeler (Internally funded)

Purpose of VARDA-GEN is the calculation of unavailability and failure probability of a cutset list generated (in the Risa+ framework) by the module TREEMOD. The major effort of this module is the calculation of a single cutset, while the consecutive evaluation of the system’s unavailability and failure probability is almost intuitive. The components of a cutset are modeled as Markov processes which include discontinuous transitions.

BDD-GEN

Package for the exact evaluation of fault trees (Internally funded)

ERRA developed a binary decision diagram (BDD) methodology to automatically construct a BDD from the fault and event tree diagrams entered into RISAPLUS+ computer program. The binary decision diagram is constructed by applying a form of Shannon’s decomposition. The benefit of applying the BDD methodology rather than applying traditional kinetic tree methods is that many fault and event trees may be analyzed exactly rather than using approximate upper bound methods. The method is particularly effective for fault and event trees with relatively few dependent branches.

SIM-GEN

Structural reliability system simulation library (Internally funded)

HRA evaluation concept

HRAERRA in corporation with RISA GmbH developed for the VGB-Power-Tech e.V. (European industrial union for electricity and heat production) an evaluation concept for human error in technical systems and transformed this concept into the software HRA (Humanly Reliability Analysis). The HRA program uses the Swain, Therp and CDBD methods.

Our Vision

Concerns in the area of safety and reliability of technical systems are more current than ever, and their application is continually advancing into new topic areas. So that we can continue to offer fitting solutions concepts in the area of environmental information systems in future, we adopt the latest trends and new developments early. We use our experience to the advantage of our customers.
